GENERAL INFORMATION
The First Vice President’s Office (FVPO) of Zanzibar has received a grant from ACCF to build capacity in mainstreaming climate change adaptation and implementation of the National Climate Change Strategy 2014.
The project is supporting the Government of Zanzibar to strengthen national capacities on climate change and to integrate climate resilience into development planning in two critical sectors: agriculture and fisheries at the national, local, and municipal levels. Furthermore, it supports the development of project concept notes in order to mobilize additional climate finance to build the resilience of these sectors.
The project components include:
- Climate change mainstreaming guidelines and screening tools updated, and staff capacity to mainstream climate change interventions in two sectoral plans enhanced.
- Capacity of the Climate Change Unit and staff in FVPO / President’s Office, Finance and Planning (PO-FP) / Zanzibar Planning Commission (ZPC) to support climate change action planning and resource mobilization, and to enhance monitoring of implementation.
- Mainstreaming adaptation in the agriculture and fisheries sectors in Zanzibar’s annual and medium-term planning cycles, and a minimum of two adaptation project concept notes prepared for external financing (following Green Climate Fund guidelines).
- Capacity of Local Government Authorities to guide the development of Local Adaptation Plans of Action (LAPAs), and their integration into overall planning and budgeting processes enhanced
The project key deliverables upon completion include the following:
- A team of five government officials from the Ministry of Finance and Planning, the Department of Environment, and the Zanzibar Environmental Management Authority attended the training course on the Development of Concept Notes for the Green Climate Fund, facilitated by MTDI. The course took place from 18 to 27 February 2019 at the Global Village Hotel in Manzini, Eswatini (Swaziland).
- A training workshop on the maintenance and operation of the website (zanenvironment.go.tz) was conducted at the Institute of Professional Development Studies, Zanzibar, from 12 to 16 October 2020. The training involved five participants (four from the Department of Environment and one from the Zanzibar Environmental Management Authority). It was facilitated by trainers from the consultancy firm HM&Y Technologies, as per the contract. The purpose of the training was to build the capacity of Department of Environment staff to maintain the website and upload documents upon completion of the consultancy assignment.
