Advancing Kenya’s Green Growth Agenda
Background

The project supports the Kenyan National Environment Trust Fund (NETFUND) to develop project proposals in the forestry, green growth, and agroforestry sectors that will advance the country’s transition toward a green economy. It will further enhance the capacity of key stakeholders in project development and climate finance mobilization.

This climate readiness initiative is implemented with grants from ACCF, with co-funding from the Government of Kenya. It aims to help Kenya design and implement projects that promote low-carbon development and climate resilience, in line with the country’s Green Economy Strategy and Implementation Plan (GESIP).

Objectives

The project supported the prioritization and development of investment-ready low-carbon project proposals that have been presented to appropriate domestic and international funding sources for consideration. It will further enhance the capacity of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources in project development and mobilizing climate finance. The project will strengthen the capacity of key agencies within the Kenyan government, which will, in turn, provide a strong pipeline of projects to potential financiers, thereby bolstering the realization of Kenya’s aspirations for sustainable development and green growth.

Main Components/Outputs

The project components include:

  1. Capacity building for the Resource Mobilization Committee.
  2. Development of investment-ready projects and programs in prioritized low-carbon initiatives such as climate-smart agriculture, green innovation, and forestry, to be presented to appropriate domestic and international funding sources.
  3. Enhancing the capacity of counties to access climate finance.
Key Achievements or Progress

The project key deliverables upon completion include the following:

  1. Training on resource mobilization:
Twenty-eight members of the Resource Mobilization Committee under the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources were trained in February 2018 by a climate finance expert recruited by NETFUND. The participants represented all major sectors of Kenya’s economy, including 16 from ministries and other government agencies, and now play a key role in developing strategic funding proposals aligned with national priorities.

  2. Development of investment-ready project concept notes and proposals on climate-smart agriculture, including:

  • The Lake Naivasha Ecosystem-Based Management Project

  • The Project on Overcoming Food and Nutrition Insecurity in Tana River County

  • Increasing the Resilience of Smallholder Farmers in the Cotton Value Chain

  • A full proposal titled Scaling Up Climate Resilience of Smallholder Farmers and Pastoralists in Kenyan Counties

  1. Development of investment-ready project concept notes on green innovation, including:

  • Supporting a Sustainable, Climate-Responsive Tourism Industry in Kenya

  • Strengthening the National Innovation Ecosystem for Improved Climate Response

  • Climate-Resilient Aggregation, Storage, Warehousing Receipts, and Trading Facility for Dried Grains in Uasin Gishu, Trans Nzoia, and Nakuru Counties

  1. Development of investment-ready project concept notes on forestry – ongoing.
