On July 13, 2023, the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development of Cote d’Ivoire launched a new project, titled "Preparation of Cote d'Ivoire for Decarbonization of Solid, Medical and Pharmaceutical Waste Management to Achieve GHG Mitigation Objectives in accordance with the NDC and the 2050 Objective of the Paris Agreement". This project is funded by the African Development Bank’s Africa Climate Change Fund (ACCF) under its demand-driven window at an amount of US$ 277 300.00.
The project aims to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions from Solid Waste Management (SWM). This will be achieved through supporting the development of a national SWM strategy, the implementation of pilot projects for the decarbonization of SWM, and the capacity building of stakeholders in the sector.
The project is being executed by the National Climate Change Programme (NCCP) under the Ministry of Environment
The launch ceremony was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Health, the ACCF/AfDB, public health officials, waste management companies and other stakeholders. The project is expected to have a significant impact on the SWM sector in the country. Most especially, it will contribute to reducing GHG emissions, improve public health, and create jobs. The project is also expected to serve as a model for other countries in Africa that are seeking to decarbonize their SWM sectors.
